Orthodontics is the medical speciality that diagnoses and corrects misalignments of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment improves function (chewing, speech, breathing) as well as aesthetics. In Switzerland the title “Specialist in Orthodontics SSO” is protected and requires three to four years of further training.
Orthodontics is not only about aesthetics. It corrects functional problems — bite discrepancies, crowding, crossbites — that have lifelong consequences if left untreated. This page explains when treatment makes sense and who is qualified to carry it out.
When is treatment indicated?
For crowding, spacing, crossbite, deep bite, open bite or overjet. The functional effects range from a higher risk of decay to jaw joint problems. First check-up: age 7–8.
Specialist vs. general dentist
General dentists may carry out simple orthodontic treatments. Complex cases belong in the hands of a specialist — the additional training takes three and a half to four years.
What health insurers cover
Basic insurance covers nothing. For congenital conditions recognised by the Swiss disability insurance (IV), treatment is reimbursed under certain conditions. Supplementary insurance for children often covers 75% up to a maximum amount.
